Chemistry Inside Living Cells

We build chemical and protein tools to see, record, and reprogram metal chemistry in cells — work anchored in copper, the metal where biology's redox chemistry is most consequential and least understood.

Our Research

Copper only became available to life after the oceans filled with oxygen, and the enzymes that followed make animals animal — respiration, connective tissue, neurotransmitters. But that redox capacity requires copper to be tightly regulated, by protein networks that control its import, export, and delivery. We want to understand how this metal shaped life, and how to use it to do chemistry that has never happened in nature.
